We all love the sunshine, it gives off good vibes, puts a smile on your face and a spring in your step. There is a good side and a bad side to the sunshine, so lets look at reasons we need the sun and then the good and bad stuff.
It radiates light and heat, or solar energy, which makes it possible for life to exist on Earth. Plants need sunlight to grow. Animals, including humans, need plants for food and the oxygen they produce. Without heat from the sun, Earth would freeze.Sunlight is essential for human health and well-being. The health benefits of sunlight include generating the production of vitamin D, supporting bone health, lowering blood pressure, preventing disease, and promoting good mental health.
There's good reason why vitamin D is called “the sunshine vitamin.” When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it makes vitamin D from cholesterol. The sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays hit cholesterol in the skin cells, providing the energy for vitamin D synthesis to occur.
Too much time in the hot sun can lead to a number of health conditions. This includes sunburn, dehydration, hyponatremia, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. UV rays are an invisible kind of radiation that comes from the sun, tanning beds, and sunlamps. UV rays can damage skin cells. Protection from UV rays is important all year, not just during the summer.
Just because you are a eprson of colour means you can't get skin cancer...
Let us just BUST that myth now. While it is true the darker your skin, the higher levels of melanin protect you from UV rays there is still a change of Melanoma. For those of us who are lighter, there is a risk, alsothough a lower one than in white skin of getting melonomas. If you notice a change in skin colour or pigmentation on our skin, then visit your Doctor to get further confirmation.
