With the recent sad events of the passing of Her Majesty Quen Elizabeth II it seemed fitting to publish this blog post. For 70 years she ruled with purpose. It was her duty she said to serve her country and the nations which were part of the Commonwelth. The Queen led us through change after the loss of her father King George VI in 1952. Now we see King Charles III lead us through change yet again after the desth of the Queen 8th September 2022.

Change is all around us. It is enevitable, you will have to learn to adapt or get left behind.

Socrates said, The secret of change is to focus all of your energy,

not on fighting the old, but in building the new.

In my previous role as a Business COnsultant, I was responsible for championing change through organisations and teams. So here are my views and thoughts on how to lead through change....

Over the past 2 years, with COVID, changes in all areas of business and our personal lives have had massive effects on our mental wellbeing, our health and our finances. No one could have ever predicted 2020 / 2021 would have been a year such as it was. Coming up now in 2022 there is more change to come with a new UK Government and a New King. Cost of living and high energy bills along with static rates of pay are times not seen for the longest while.

Changes to the way in which many of us look at life, loved ones and business has forever been shaken and changed. Nothing can ever be a given, or taken for granted.

With change comes opportunities. This has always been the case from time imemorial. look at the times in Egypt with Pharoah, from Feast to Famine, or the times of King David from Fear to Reverence, or Ruth from Queen to saviour of her people in biblical times.

  • Those who welcome change, are less stressed, and are able to adapt quicker to change. Having negative thinking makes going through change difficult, as you are not focussed on the outcome, but instead on what is in the past, and not what is in front of you.
  • Embrace and welcome the change. If you are able to see the benefits of the change, and why the changes are needed it will make life easier for you to adapt.
  • Question change - yes that is right I said to question change. Is it right for this time? Are there any other alternatives? are there any benefits? Why is the changes needed? You see we are an inquisitive lot us humans, and we must seek to question and satisfy our own questions by the answers we come up with when digging around, and digging into yourself for the responses
  • If you have to work within an organisation change is cultural and needs to be fed down from the top, as well from the bottom up. It has to be seen as a two way thing.
  • From an organisations perspective, without the backing of the leaders it will be difficult to implement in the organisation. Leaders have to be fully engaged, and ready to be seen as drivers of change, to help facilitate it throughout the organisation. Unity in implementing change is mandatory if it is to succeed. Understanding a group vision and mission helps to embed change effectively. Having a mutual cause helps focus and effective change.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 says there is a time for everything
and a season for every activity under the heavens…

The word tells us that we must be ready for change. Just as we are open to the seasons changing each year.

Change Is A Chance To Master New Skills

Change can give us the opportunity to master new skills. Change can also test our abilities to adapt and survive, or find a new way. Mastering new skills comes about by reviewing and repeating and learning. They say it takes over 10,000 hours to become a master at something. The 10,000 hour rule. This is the old school belief that to master a skill, you need to dedicate 10,000 hours to learning and perfecting it.

So how do you master a skill?

Step 1: Recognize The Skill You're Lacking.

Make a plan to improve them. What are those skills for you? What do you most need to learn to get what you want?

If you are not able to answer these questions, then take the time to do so now. Understanding what skill you are lacking, or what you want to achieve will determine the rate of your success. Having direction and a goal is key to success.

It will help you to seek out the right person, book or programme.

Step 2: Accumulate Knowledge At Breakneck Speed.

You cannot do this step until you are clear on STEP ONE

Do you know someone around you with that skill who can mentor you?

Find someone who is where you want to be, and ask them for mentorship. Howevver, people who are at the top expect YOU to do something for them in return, so what skill do you have that could help them, who do you know what connections do you have that you an brter with? ask them if there is anything YOU can do to help them? Perhaps you are a personal trainer, or nutritionist, or graphic designer and they need someone with your skills?

A mentor will support you if you are dedicated, respect their time and take action.

learn to ask them good questions, you will be respected for the questions you put forward. Let's face it, if you want mentoring you need to also guide your mntor in the areas they can best support you, so a good way is to ASK the RIGHT questions that will help propel you forward, or help you GAIN a better understanding.

Step 3: Jump In Fast And Learn As You Go.

Be prepared for the ride, because when you are ready the teacher willl appear! (Chinese Proverb)

Sometimes we learn when we are pushed in the deep end to either SINK to the bottom or SWIM to survive...

TAKE ACTION and start doing and learning on the go! Trust in the process.

You do not have to see the whole stair case to know that the rest of the satirs are there.. just take the first step!

Dr Martin Luther King Jr

Step 4: Develop a Daily Practice for Mastery.

In other words make time to hone your skils, practice them daily and make time in your day to practice them. Use visuaisaton, affirmations, action and mediation to hone your skills.
They say readers are leaders, so read the right books, be around the right leaders. Take good notes. Always find ways to improve your sklls, seek out those who are better than you, or are in the position you wish to be in, learn from them.
